Helpful Answers for Parents

  • Laughing gas, also known as nitrous oxide, is a safe and gentle sedative used to help children feel calm and relaxed during dental visits. It’s a sweet-smelling gas that’s mixed with oxygen and breathed in through a small nose mask. While your child stays awake and can respond to questions, they may feel giggly, light, or dreamy—hence the name “laughing gas.”

The effects wear off quickly once the mask is removed, so your child can return to normal activities soon after the appointment. It’s a trusted option we use often to make dental care easier and more comfortable for kids.

    • Limit Food and Drink:
Try not to give your child a big meal right before the appointment. And avoid milk and dairy products A light snack a couple of hours before is usually fine. An empty or overly full stomach can sometimes cause nausea with laughing gas.

    • Comfortable Clothing:
Dress your child in loose, comfortable clothes to help them feel relaxed during the visit.

    • Tell Us About Medications or Illness:
Let us know if your child has a cold, congestion, or is taking any medications. Nasal breathing is important for laughing gas to work effectively.

    • Arrive a Few Minutes Early:
Arriving early helps reduce stress and gives you time to ask any last-minute questions.

    • Talk to Your Child in a Positive Way:
Let your child know the dental visit will be easy and that the mask will help them feel calm and relaxed. Avoid using words like “shot,” “drill,” or “pain.”

  • Milk and other dairy products can upset your child’s stomach when combined with laughing gas (nitrous oxide). Even though laughing gas is very safe, it can sometimes cause mild nausea—especially if the stomach is full or contains dairy.

To help prevent this, we recommend avoiding milk, cheese, yogurt, or other dairy foods for at least 2 hours before the appointment. A small, non-dairy snack like toast, applesauce, or crackers is usually okay.

Our goal is to keep your child comfortable and make their visit as smooth and positive as possible!

  • Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is an FDA-approved topical solution used to arrest (stop) the progression of dental caries (tooth decay), especially in pediatric and special needs patients. It is a safe, non-invasive alternative to traditional restorative treatment for certain cavities, particularly in young children or in situations where cooperation may be limited.

    SDF contains:

    • Silver, which acts as an antimicrobial agent to kill the bacteria that cause cavities.

    • Fluoride, which helps remineralize and strengthen the tooth structure.

    • Ammonia, which stabilizes the solution.

    Benefits of SDF:

    • Stops active decay and prevents it from spreading.

    • Quick and painless to apply—no drilling or local anesthesia required.

    • Useful for managing decay in baby teeth until they naturally exfoliate.

    • Often used as part of a minimally invasive treatment approach.

    What Parents Should Know:
While SDF is highly effective, it causes the decayed portion of the tooth to turn dark or black, which is a visible sign that the decay has been arrested. Healthy tooth structure remains unaffected in color. This staining is purely cosmetic and does not indicate harm.

    SDF is often recommended when:

    • A child is very young or anxious about dental procedures.

    • Decay is present in baby teeth that will eventually fall out.

    • There is a need to delay or avoid more invasive dental treatment.

  • General anesthesia is a controlled state of unconsciousness used in pediatric dentistry to allow children to receive comprehensive dental care safely and comfortably. Under general anesthesia, the child is fully asleep, does not feel pain, and has no memory of the procedure.

This option is typically recommended for:

    • Very young children with extensive dental needs

    • Children with special health care needs or developmental conditions

    • Patients with high levels of dental anxiety or an inability to cooperate safely in a traditional setting

    • Cases where multiple or complex procedures are required in a single visit

    How It Works:
General anesthesia is administered by a licensed anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist in a hospital or outpatient surgical center. During the procedure, the child’s breathing, heart rate, and vital signs are closely monitored at all times to ensure safety.

    Benefits of General Anesthesia:

    • Allows all necessary treatment to be completed in one visit

    • Eliminates fear, pain, and movement during dental procedures

    • Reduces emotional stress for both the child and the family

    Safety and Preparation:
General anesthesia is very safe when provided by trained professionals in an appropriate setting. A preoperative evaluation will be conducted to assess your child’s health and readiness. You will also receive detailed instructions about fasting, medications, and post-anesthesia care.

At our practice, we only recommend general anesthesia when it is truly in the best interest of your child’s overall health and well-being.
